Church name

• African: The AME Church was organized by people of African descent. The church was not founded in Africa, nor is it only for persons of African descent. The church is open to people of all races.
• Methodist: The church's roots are in the Methodist church. Members of St. George's Methodist Church left the congregation when faced with racial discrimination, but continued with the Methodist doctrine and the order of worship.
• Episcopal: The AME Church operates under an episcopal form of church government. The denomination leaders are bishops of the church. Episcopal, in this sense, refers to the form of government under which the church operates

St. Peter Claver Catholic Church

is a very diverse and well-integrated parish of 500 families in Macon, GA

St. Peter Catholic Church and School History Marker, Macon Georgia

This African-American parish began in 1888 and was named St. Peter Claver in 1903,

in honor of the Patron Saint of Negro Missions. The current school, convent, and rectory were built here after the parish moved from Pio Nono Avenue in 1913. The church was built in 1928. This was one of two campuses in Georgia funded by Mother Katherine Drexel (later canonized Saint Katherine Drexel), staffed by her Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (SBS), and built by Father Ignatius Lissner and the Society of African Missions Fathers (SMA).

The SMA operated the parish from 1913-1970, and the SBS staffed the school from 1915-2003.

The Mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through word and deed. At every level of the Connection and in every local church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church shall engage in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the AME Church evolved: that is, to seek out and save the lost, and serve the needy.
