What do Lutherans Believe?

Lutherans believe in the Christian faith as revealed in Holy Scripture and first summarized in the Apostle's Creed. We believe Holy Scripture to be the true and inspired Word of God. Therefore, Lutherans place their complete trust and faith in the Word of God that has been revealed to man through the written and spoken Word. In Christ, God revealed Himself as the Savior, suffering punishment and death so that we might share within in the resurrection life. Through faith in Christ, a new life begins in us. Our faith nourished by God's gifts through His Word and Sacraments.
Lutherans believe that faith is the essential part of salvation. The way of living is only a by-product of the way of believing. Lutherans do not stress prohibitions of blue laws, but rather think the Christian life as a grateful response to a loving Father. Lutherans practice a liturgical form of worship, not because it is required, but because through this means we share in the experiences of the family of Christian worshipers of all ages.

Lutherans participate in the two sacraments instituted by Christ. 

The LORD'S SUPPER is an encounter of the believer with the Living Lord, who is truly present in the Holy Communion to forgive sins and renew the spiritual life of believers. BAPTISM is the beginning of a life in faith, in which a person is born into the Kingdom of God and becomes an heir of salvation.

Lutheranism is a major branch of Western Christianity which identifies with the teachings of the 16th century German reformer Martin Luther. Luther's efforts to reform the theology and practice of the church launched the Protestant Reformation. The reaction of the government and church authorities to the international spread of his writings, beginning with the 95 Theses, divided Western Christianity.

The split between the Lutheran and the Roman Catholic Church arose mainly over the doctrine of Justification. Lutheranism advocates a doctrine of justification "by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone" which contradicted the Roman view of "faith formed by love", or "faith and works". Unlike the Reformed Churches, Lutherans retain many of the liturgical practices and sacramental teachings of the pre-reformation Church. Lutheran theology significantly differs from Reformed theology in Christology, the purpose of God's Law, divine grace, the concept of "once saved always saved", and predestination.
